Copa America 2019: Manchester United, Barcelona, and Newcastle United transfer targets to watch
Copa America 2019 gets underway this Friday, with host country Brazil eyeing their eighth title in the competition. The current holders are one of the favourites to reach the final in Rio de Janeiro on July 7 – but will have to do so without star man Neymar.Neymar will not be able to help BrazilGetty Images10

The Paris Saint-Germain forward was ruled out of the tournament last week after rupturing ankle ligaments in Brazils 2-0 win over Qatar. There will plenty of other talent on show though, with talkSPORT.com running you through some of the players who will be out to impress in the hope of a big summer transfer…

James Rodriguez (Real Madrid and Colombia)

The Colombian has proven his credentials as a top-class international midfielder, however in recent years he has failed to replicate that kind of form domestically.Rodriguez’s two-year loan spell at Bayern Munich was a disappointing on the whole, particularly in his second season, with the Bundesliga giants opting against makingthe 27-year-old’s switch a permanent one.Colombia striker James Rodriguez will be hoping that a good tournament will attract plenty of interest in his servicesGETTY10

However, a repeat of his performances at the 2014 World Cup – a tournament which was also held in Brazil – would put Rodriguez right in the shop window this summer. With the experienced frontman unlikely to force his way into Zinedine Zidane’s plans at parent club Real Madrid, he is therefore expected to leave the club. And with his former Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti reportedly keen on signing Rodriguez, a move to Napoli looks a very attractive proposition as things stand.

Everton (Gremio and Brazil)

Everton is one of only three players in Brazil’s 23-man squad not currently plying their trade in Europe, alongside Corinthians right-back Fagner and back-up goalkeeper Cassio. However, the young left winger, currently at Gremio, is the most likely of that trio to get a move abroad this summer, having already been linked with Manchester City, Manchester United and AC Milan. He already has six goals to his name this season from the opening 12 games, which led to him securing a spot in manager Tite’s squad.Gremio youngster Everton has a bright future in the gameGETTY10

The Copa Libertadores winner – who already has four caps for Brazil – will not have it easy when it comes to competition for a starting berth at the Copa America though.Everton will battle with Philippe Coutinho, Richarlison and David Neres for one of the two spots on the flanks, but if he can replicate his club form on the international stage he has every chance of becoming a regular for his country.

Josef Martinez (Atlanta United and Venezuela)

No-one takes penalties like him. Despite his superb goalscoring exploits in the MLS, Josef Martinez is more well known by football supporters owing to his bizarre penalty technique. The 26-year-old certainly knows where the back of the net is though, scoring an incredible 35 times in 39 games for Atlanta United to fire them to the title in 2018, while he also landed the Golden Boot and MLS MVP award.Josef Martinez’s bizarre penalty technique has had football supporters all over the world talkinggetty10

The omens are good for Martinez, with one of his former team-mates, Miguel Almiron, already securing a big-money move to Newcastle earlier this year.If Martinez still has his shooting boots on for Venezuela at this summer’s tournament, then like Almiron, a move to the Premier League could be within touching distance. The Venezuelan has been linked with a move to the Premier League with ex-Bolton star Stuart Holden confirming there is interest in the player.

Wuilker Farinez (Millonarios and Venezuela)

Venezuela also have a promising young goalkeeper between the sticks inWuilker Farinez.Farinez, 21, is currently on Colombian side Millonarios’ books, with Farinez’s father confirming last month that Barcelona are interested in signing his son.Wuilker Farinez (back row, second left) is a rising star in south American footballgetty10

He already has 12 caps to his name for the national team, helping his nation to the runners-up spot in the Under-20 World Cup in 2017 – where he went 506 minutes without conceding a goal.

Nahitan Nandez (Boca Juniors and Uruguay)

The Boca Junior midfielder is another name to keep an eye on during this year’s Copa America. The 23-year-old has been at the club since 2017, helping Boca win the league title in his first full season on their books.Nahitan Nandez, right, has established himself as a driving force in the heart of Boca Juniors’ midfieldgetty10

Duvan Zapata (Atalanta and Colombia)

Atalanta made history by qualifying for their first-ever Champions League this season, with the club’s top scorer Duvan Zapata playing an integral role in achieving that feat.Zapata has been linked to the likes of Inter Milan, as well as Premier League outfit West Ham, however the striker has played down those reports – insisting he is ‘happy’ to remain at the Serie A outfit.Duvan Zapata has been a big hit at Atalanta10

However, a productive tournament for the Colombian forward could intensify the interest in his services and make the 28-year-old ponder a move elsewhere.

Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint-Germain and Uruguay)

The responsibility of scoring goals will fall primarily on Edinson Cavani’s head for the Copa America, with Luis Suarez’s participation at the tournament in doubt owing to a knee complaint.Cavani has been a major hit at PSG, scoring an incredible 193 goals across six seasons for the French giants – making him the club’s all-time top scorer.Edinson Cavani is being targeted by Atletico Madridgetty10

With Cavani’s current contract expiring at the Parc des Princes next summer, it’s believed Atletico Madrid are pondering a move for the striker.Antoine Griezmann’s departure means the La Liga side want to bolster their attacking options, with Diego Costa’s future also in doubt.

Salomon Rondon (West Bromwich Albion and Venezuela)

There has been continued uncertainty over his club future, but Rondon hasn’t let that speculation affect his on-field performances. The 29-year-old scored a brace during Venezuela’s 3-0 friendly victory over the USA in Cincinnati on Sunday, taking his international tally up to 24 goals. As a result he has now overtaken previous record-holder Juan Arango as his nation’s all-time record goalscorer.Solomon Rondon scored 12 goals and contributed seven assists during a successful loan at St James’ Park last seasongetty10

The West Bromwich Albion forward was a big hit on loan at Newcastle last season, scoring 12 goals and providing seven assists during the 2018/19 campaign.Magpies boss Rafa Benitez is very keen on signing the striker, but Newcastle hierarchy are reluctant to activate the 16.5million release clause in his Baggies contract because of his age.And with Benitez’s current deal also set to expire at the end of next month, that continued uncertainty could result in Newcastle missing out on one of their top summer transfer targets.

Philippe Coutinho (Barcelona and Brazil)

On his day the Brazilian maestro is unplayable, but even by his own admission he hasn’t lived up to expectations at Barcelona. That has fuelled speculation that Coutinho, a 142million signing from Liverpool back in January 2018, could move on to pastures new this summer. And Coutinho has been tipped for a stunning Premier League return, with Manchester United and Chelsea both reportedly interested in the 27-year-old.Phillipe Coutinho has struggled to make a major impact since joining Barcelona from Liverpool in January 2018getty10

The Brazilian is valued by the Catalan giants at around 80million, which would represent a significant hit on what they originally paid out for him. With Neymar ruled out of Copa America, it represents the perfect opportunity for Coutinho to take the competition by storm and subsequently generate a tug-of-war over him.
