Soaked by the substitutes

In May 2010, Redknapp helped Tottenham secure Champions League football for the 2010/11 season with a 1-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.Understandably, there were jubilant scenes in the away dressing room and they spilled over into Rednapp’s post-match interview with Sky Sports and he was drenched in water by some of the Spurs players. However, the players that took part in the prank included David Bentley, Wilson Palacios and Sebastian Bassong, all of whom started the game on the bench so perhaps there was a more sinister meaning behind it…

‘No wonder he’s in the f****** reserves’

This incident still makes the rounds on social media and that’s pretty impressive considering it happened during his second spell as Portsmouth boss, which finished in October 2008 and before social media was really big.Again, Redknapp was giving an interview with Sky Sports when a stray ball hit him and he was not best pleased! It’s not clear who kicked the ball but after Redknapp gave his player a piece of his mind he muttered the famous words while the camera was still rolling: “No wonder he’s in the f****** reserves”.*WARNING: Shocking language in this video!

Tried to sign Eden Hazard

Redknapp has lifted the lid on the events about players he’s signed and sold as well as the ones that got away, more of which you’ll see later. And it turns out he tried to sign Eden Hazard before he completed his mega-money move to Chelsea from Lille. He told talkSPORT how he met Hazard in a hotel room in France to try and convince him to join Tottenham. However, Redknapp jokingly said the fact the Belgian spent three hours in his company was probably the reason why he didn’t sign for Spurs!Hazard opted to join Chelsea in May 2012 and has become one of the world’s best players1

Benjani’s deadline day move to Manchester City

It seems like a distant memory now but there was a time when Manchester City were buying fairly average players.City bid 9.5million for Portsmouth’s Benjani Mwaruwari in February 2008 and Redknapp and the Pompey hierarchy saw this as an offer too good to refuse.Despite Benjani or ‘Benji’s’, as his former boss knows him as,pleas to stay at the south coast club, Redknapp drove him to the airport to fly him to Manchester. However, Benjani refused to board the plane so Redknapp had to go back to the airport to make sure he boarded the next flight. With a heavy heart, Benjani signed minutes before the deadline and his career somewhat tailed off after that.

Sticking up for his nephew

Some West Ham fans were unsure about whether Frank Lampard Jr would have what it takes to make an impact at Upton Park.A 17-year-old Lampard was publicly criticised by a fan who said Scott Canham, who was shipped out to Brentford in 1996, was better than him.Redknapp stepped in and dismissed these suggestions, backing Lampard, who is also his nephew, to reach the very top of football. And it’s fair to say Redknapp was spot on as Lampard had a glittering career after moving to Chelsea in 2001 – winning three Premier Leagues, four FA Cups and a Champions League crown.

A lucky day for Steve the West Ham fan

One supporter ended up getting more than he bargained for during the Hammers’ pre-season friendly at non-league Oxford City in 1994 when Redknapp threw him on during the game.Redknapp recounted how this fan, named Steve, wouldn’t stop criticising striker Lee Chapman so challenged Steve by saying: “can you play as well as you can talk”.Steve replied: “Well I’m better than that Chapman.” The lifelong Hammers fans made his debut for his beloved club…and scored a goal!Redknapp finished the story hilariously, saying: “He was better than Chapman too.”

Harry is best known for playing for West Ham and Bournemouth, before going on to manage them after he retired. He then went on to lead Portsmouth to FA Cup glory at Wembley in 2008, and Tottenham to the Champions League. Related articles. ITV Im A Celebrity 2018: What time is I'm A Celeb on tonight?
