Jose Mourinho blamed his lack of available central defenders for Saturday’s disappointing 2-2 draw at Southampton.The Red Devils, playing with a makeshift back three featuring Nemanja Matic and Scott McTominay, quickly found themselves two goals down after a fierce strike from Stuart Armstrong and a wonderful free-kick from Cedric.However, the scores were level before half-time thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrera, but United could not carry their momentum into the second-half and remain winless in their last three Premier League games.3

Phil Jones was the only fit centre-back at St Mary’s and, while Mourinho laments his lack of options at the back, he praised the men who stepped into defence.He told talkSPORT: “I have to bemoan that we had one central defender available to play a Premier League game, which is always a difficult game away from home against a team who has dangerous players in attack.“The thing that I have to bemoan is that I had to organise a team with only one central defender. I have to praise the people who tried to do their best.3

McTominay was played out of position in a back three

“I have to praise people like Scot McTominay and Nemanja Matic who played in positions that are not their positions.“I have to praise Phil Jones because he was able to be quite compact and solid with these two boys.”

“I dont care about the table,” Mourinho added. “I care about the quality of the opponent and good players.“Good players, good team and they are not a team to be where they are. So the table doesnt tell me anything in terms of my matches.“I think we should be better than we are but I think the teams who are fighting for the title are the best teams.”
